Fiji military head meets with indigenous chiefs in row with government

Published: November 13, 2006, Author: AngelSupport

Fiji’s unpredictable military commander met with the nation’s indigenous chiefs Friday, after the traditional leaders said they will not mediate in an escalating row between the government and armed forces. Commodore Frank Bainimarama had refused Thursday to attend the Great Council of Chiefs meeting, saying they had already decided to support the indigenous Fijian-dominated government’s contentious parliamentary bills, which Bainimarama wants scrapped.
