In Anchorage Alaska, during the 59th annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission, the Makah Nation receives the renewal of a quota for the harvest of up to 20 gray whales over the next five years for subsistence purposes. However, a statute in the 1972 U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act , has suspended Makah Whaling until an environmental impact statement and public testimony is completed and ruled upon.
