The dangers of such a site are well known. WHEREAS; the dangers of the disposal of such waste have prompted a number of states to completely ban any such disposal within their state causing a national problem as to where the disposal from plants throughout the U.S. should be located, and WHEREAS; there have been bills introduced into Congress by the Washington State delegation to authorize the use of Hanford as a permanent national disposal site, and WHEREAS; if such legislation should succeed Indian Tribes whose reservation is located within a close proximity to the Hanford site have additional dangers and problems that will be greatly increased if such legislation should pass, and WHEREAS; the total environment including but not limited to valuable water resources, fish runs, wildlife, agricultural lands and air are gravely menaced by the proposed legislation, and NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the delegates here assembled at the Conference of Tribal Governments this 15th day of May, 1979 do hereby declare their opposition to any and all legislation or other actions which might utilize the Hanford site for further dumping of nuclear wastes of the dangerous substances accumulated elsewhere, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this conference urges the Congressional delegation to withdraw the proposed legislation and cease to consider any such others, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Conference urges all other citizens within the northwest to make themselves heard on this important matter.
