This article explores how global environmental organizations unintentionally fostered the notion of indigenous people and rights in a country that officially opposed these concepts. It examines how the concept of indigeneity was imported to China by environmental movements, and how ethnic minority groups in China have come to contextualize their identities based on such global notions of indigeneity.
