This orginal doctrine held that Native Americans possessed inherent natural legal rights, maintained jurisdiction over their property and their territory, were free of European authority. The Yakama Nation is perhaps most affected by action of the U.S. Department of Energy. The greatest concentration of radioactive and hazardous waste in the Western Hemiphere is in Yakama ceded land at the DOE’s Hanford Site.
