Traditional Salish Wisdom

Helps us to preserve and protect, the invaluable wisdom of global Indigenous cultures.
As the clinical division of CWIS, the Center for Traditional Medicine (CTM), founded by Dr. Leslie Korn, has proudly served Indigenous communities for 45 years. CTM offers pro bono health care, contributes to both domestic and international policy, and conducts research grounded in Indigenous knowledge, with a focus on holistic well-being and the advancement of traditional healing practices. CTM programs confront the devastating impact of Type 2 diabetes and other diseases of modernity that have surged in Indigenous communities due to colonization and food insecurity.
Founded by a request from tribal governments in 1979, the Center for World Indigenous Studies (CWIS) has served as a trusted documentation repository for over 45 years. CWIS activist scholars have been at the forefront of producing, preserving, and safeguarding global tribal and Indigenous cultural, academic, and policy materials. As the custodian of this vital knowledge, CWIS is committed to the digitization and preservation of these invaluable resources so they are accessible to emerging leaders and communities worldwide.
Our award-winning documentaries created in partnership with Singing Burro Productions and FNX, Public Broadcasting Television, spotlight the resurgence of Indigenous cultural healing practices, foods, and medicines as vital tools for nourishing people and the planet. These stories are a testament to the enduring power of Indigenous wisdom in restoring health, self-determination, and resilience in the face of food insecurity and climate change. Donate to share ancient wisdom with modern audiences, empowering the movement for social justice and Indigenous sovereignty.
“Your work brings together culturally appropriate methods for tribal nurses, physicians, traditional healers and patients to employ as health strategies to reverse diabetes, pain and depression in Indian Country. This is what we have been waiting for!”
Henry Cagey, Former Chairman, Lummi Indian Nation
“Without the inspirational work of CWIS, it would not have been possible to advance the recognition of indigenous peoples in the ‘Regions of Europe’.”
Göran Hansson, former General Assembly Chairman of the Unrecognized Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO)
“I have been a dedicated donor to the CWIS and CTM for over 40 years, as well as a former board member. I am deeply inspired by the work of Chief George Manuel and Dr. Rudy Ryser, whose activism and scholarship has been instrumental in advancing Indigenous rights for over half a century.”
