This paper describes the effectiveness of the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages initiative in the preservation and revitalization of indigenous languages in the Arctic. It was found that the status of indigenous languages in Arctic nations was already dire, as many groups did not have effective means of language transmission or preservation. The UN IYIL was not far reaching enough to provide the resources needed to rescue critically endangered Arctic languages.
