This is Chapter 1 of Rudolph Ryser’s book “Biodiversity Wars”. It discusses the distinction held by “peoples” in diplomatic, political and common discourse and describes Fourth World Peoples as possessing “rights” that include maintaining a reciprocal relation between the people and the biologically diverse environment. The Chapter sets the stage for discussing the generation’s long political and violent conflicts between Fourth World peoples and the world’s states uncontrollably consuming nature’s life-giving support and unrestrained development generating poisons in the land, air and seas at the all life on the planet. Chapter 1 defines the “rights of peoples” to preserve, protect and guarantee life supporting systems on the planet.
