This article discusses polls carried out by Nielsen and IllumiNative regarding opinions about the use of culturally-appropriative mascots for US sports teams. It was found that 51% of men and 46% of women agree that appropriating Native American culture through sports mascots is harmful. Further, 68% of NHL fans – the highest percentage among different sports league fans – agreed with the above statement. Finally, 47% of sports fans believed that teams such as the Washington football and Cleveland baseball teams did the right thing by changing their names and related imagery.
