As Adella Begaye notes on Indian Country Today, the EPA, Navajo government, and coal industry power brokers are making plans for the future that doesn’t include the interests of Navajo children now suffering from respiratory diseases from power plant emissions on the Navajo reservation. With three power plants emitting 100,000 tons of pollutants, including carcinogenic ones, the health of the Navajo people has been compromised for the last forty years. As Begaye – a registered nurse for the Navajo Nation — observes, maybe it’s time the children had a voice in their own future.
