Before the American oil boom in the Amazon that poisoned the land and rivers of indigenous peoples over the last half century, there was the rubber boom. As noted in Survival International, 100 years ago tens of thousands of Indians were enslaved and murdered for rubber extraction by British companies. Today, while slavery and murder are usually outsourced by US and UK corporations to local governments and mercenaries, the genocidal results are the same as they were when Europeans first conquered the hemisphere.
