The Firelight Group, a research cooperative, has released a report on the impacts of the Alberta Tar Sands on the Athabasca River and the indigenous communities suffering from its degradation. Contamination of the Athabasca violates Treaty 8, the Canadian Constitution, and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Does this mean Canada will close the largest carbon pollution site in North America? Or are the Chipewyan and Cree communities expendable in the interests of oil exports to the US?
The library is dedicated to the memory of Secwepemc Chief George Manuel (1921-1989), to the nations of the Fourth World and to the elders and generations to come.
