August National Geographic looks at the Great Bear Rainforest and Canada’s bid to become a global player in the petroleum market. With Alberta’s oil sands second only to the oil fields in Saudi Arabia, the proposed supertanker expressway known as Northern Gateway — planned to navigate the treacherous archipelago to Kitimat, British Columbia — is shaping up to become the largest environmental battle in Canadian history. For the indigenous Gitga’at of Hartley Bay, as well as First Nations across Canada, it is a battle worth fighting.
The library is dedicated to the memory of Secwepemc Chief George Manuel (1921-1989), to the nations of the Fourth World and to the elders and generations to come.
