Economic warfare by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control against Zimbabwe, as part of the punitive measures in response to land reform critical for nutrition amid a mounting food deficit, was announced by President Obama on March 6. Stating that these actions by the Zimbabwe government pose an extraordinary threat to the United States — constituting a “national emergency” — Obama stated the sanctions in effect since 2003 would continue.
