On the website of the Duwamish Tribe, tribal members give a video tour of the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center, including tribal history and the struggle with the United States Government to regain their federal recognition taken away by the Bush Administration. Speaking on behalf of the Duwamish — Chief Seattle’s people — is tribal chair Cecile Hansen, his great great grandniece. Even if you’ve never heard of the original inhabitants of Seattle and Lake Washington, the story of their long battle to restore the law of the land, and to revitalize hope for themselves and the guests they welcome to their longhouse, is one you won’t want to miss.
The library is dedicated to the memory of Secwepemc Chief George Manuel (1921-1989), to the nations of the Fourth World and to the elders and generations to come.
