Doing the Numbers

The economy of Canada has long been dependent on the theft of indigenous peoples’ resources. Cree, Algonquin, Dene, Anishnabe, Inuit and Ojibway resistance to this theft has been ongoing. Canada’s response has been to send in the army and RCMP.

As a new awareness of this theft dawns in Canada, the corporations and governments that benefited from it are attempting to portray the First Nations as freeloaders. Countering that cruel myth, Media Co-op journalist Dru Oja Jay does the numbers on the indigenous subsidizing of Canada.
