Real News looks at the 18–year lawsuit by five indigenous tribes in the Ecuadorian rainforest against Chevron Texaco.
The suit, in which Texaco was proven to have dumped billions of gallons
of toxic waste into Amazon rivers, has repeatedly been delayed by
Chevron in order to wear down the plaintiffs. Meanwhile, the waste dumps
continue to contaminate the groundwater and rivers, as the indigenous
tribes suffering from petrochemical diseases go extinct. As the attorney
for the tribes remarks, no amount of money can ever undo the ecological
damage or the genocide of the forest’s inhabitants, and for that crime
against humanity, Chevron Texaco should pay dearly.
