Annie Bird reports on the latest anti-indigenous developments in Guatemala, where Mayans are being evicted from their homelands by the army and police to facilitate biofuel plantations. Repeating the colonial pattern that displaced earlier generations of Maya from their lands, vigilantes are being encouraged by state authorities to harass, assault, and murder Mayans on behalf of multinational energy and banking corporations. As Bird notes, the history of dispossession is clear; the difference between earlier phases of genocide and the present is that the current ethnic cleansing has the indirect blessing of the United Nations as a result of its perverted policies on climate change.
