In their analysis of climate injustice, Maryan Adrangi and SK Hussan note the escalating globalization by NATO and the G20 coincides with increasing militarization against indigenous peoples, undermining their struggles for self-determination, especially when they live in resource-rich areas. Some of that militarization, observe Adrangi and Hussan, is directed at indigenous peoples in Canada, the single largest foreign supplier of oil to the United States. Bearing in mind that the largest institutional user of petroleum products in the world, the Pentagon, is fueled by the Alberta Tar Sands, indigenous activists in Canada face the daunting task of fighting climate injustice, militarization, and globalization all at the same time. As Adrangi and Hussan remark, it’s all connected.
