Resource Extraction threat to Indigenous Peoples

One of the gravest threats to the security and health of indigenous peoples the world over, according to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples is the affects of resource extraction by industries operating in or near indigenous territories. Special Rapporteur James Anaya presented his report to the UN Human Rights Counsel concluding: “the implementation of natural resource extraction and other development projects on or near indigenous territories has become one of the foremost concerns of indigenous peoples worldwide, and possibly also the most pervasive source of the challenges to the full exercise of their rights.”
