As is generally the case in the United States, whenever an oppressed group wins rights for itself and others, there is a backlash against them. That has certainly been the case for Indigenous people. Every gain that Native tribes have achieved in the past sixty years — from winning tribal recognition to instituting environmental protections for their ancestral lands — has been met with fierce resistance.
This resistance, known as the Anti-Indian Movement, has come from different people at different times, from sportsmen demanding access to native lands, to white supremacists who feel threatened by indigenous progress, to developers and extractive industries corporations who want to exploit the land.
This week we bring you two more extra feature clips from our film series Pathfinder: The Untold Story of the “Indian Business”, which is currently in production.
In the first, investigative journalist and former Center for World Indigenous Studies contributing editor Jay Taber, who spent much of his tenure with CWIS covering the Anti-Indian Movement in the Pacific Northwest, describes his first encounters with the far right-wing Christian nationalist Anti-Indian Movement and his concept of monitory democracy.
In the second clip, Taber describes how he infiltrated the far-right Christian Patriots organization and breaks down how it operates.
